“O believers! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. Should you disagree on anything, then refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you ˹truly˺ believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is the best and fairest resolution.” (Quran 4:59)
Hadith and Sunnah
“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “I have left two matters with you. As long as you hold to them, you will not go the wrong way. They are the Book of Allah and the Sunna of His Prophet.”
If the Quran is the divine instruction and the direct, unmediated word of Allah revealed to humanity for all time then the Hadith and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is its living demonstration. The Quran commands the Muslim to pray and the Sunnah shows exactly how. The Quran commands fasting and the Sunnah defines its rules and etiquettes. The Quran commands justice, generosity, honesty, and compassion and the Sunnah shows what those qualities looked like in the life of the best human being who ever walked the earth. Without the Hadith and Sunnah, the Quran remains a text to be admired. With it, the Quran becomes a way of life to be lived.
This is why the scholars of Islam have said, from the very first generation, that the Sunnah is the explanation of the Quran and why following the Prophet ﷺ is not merely a religious recommendation but a divine command stated explicitly in the Book of Allah itself:
“Say: If you love Allah, then follow me — Allah will love you and forgive your sins.” (Quran 3:31)
What Is Hadith?
The word hadith literally means a statement, report, or narrative. In Islamic terminology it refers to the authenticated reports of the sayings, actions, tacit approvals, and physical descriptions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (peace be upon him) transmitted from companion to companion, generation to generation, through carefully verified chains of narration known as isnad. The science of hadith is a collection, verification, grading, and application that represents one of the most sophisticated and meticulous intellectual traditions in human history, developed by generations of dedicated Muslim scholars whose singular purpose was to protect the prophetic legacy from error, fabrication, and distortion.
The major hadith collections are Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, together known as the Two Sahihs, followed by the Sunan of Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah — represent the most rigorously authenticated body of prophetic narrations available to the Muslim ummah, and form the primary reference points for Islamic law, theology, ethics, and spiritual guidance alongside the Quran.
What Is Sunnah?
The Sunnah literally meaning “way” or “path” refers to the established practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (peace be upon him) as derived from the hadith. It encompasses three categories: his spoken words and teachings, his actions and personal practice, and his tacit approvals of the words and actions of his companions. Together these three dimensions of the Sunnah give the Muslim ummah an extraordinarily detailed and practically applicable blueprint for Islamic life that encompass worship, family, commerce, governance, personal conduct, social interaction, and the deepest dimensions of spiritual experience.
To follow the Sunnah is the clearest, most authenticated expression of love for the Prophet ﷺ (peace be upon him) and according to the Quran itself, it is the surest path to the love and forgiveness of Allah.
