وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلْبَيْتِ مَنِ ٱسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًۭا
“And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allaah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence.” (Quran 3:97)
Hajj and Umrah
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise.” (Sahih Bukhari 1773)
Fourteen centuries ago, the Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ stood in the valley of Makkah, a barren, uninhabited land in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula and by the command of Allah raised the foundations of the Kaabah, the first house of worship ever built for humanity. Then Allah commanded him to call all of mankind to pilgrimage. Ibrahim ﷺ asked: “O Allah, how will my voice reach all of those people?” Allah told him: “You call and We will carry it.” Ibrahim ﷺ called. And the call has never stopped echoing since.
Every Muslim who has ever made the intention of Hajj and Umrah, every one of the millions who gather in Makkah each year responding to that ancient summons is answering the call of Ibrahim ﷺ. “Labbayk Allahumma labbayk “Here I am, O Allah, here I am.” These words, first spoken by Ibrahim ﷺ and repeated by every pilgrim since, are among the most powerful words in the human language, a declaration of total availability and complete surrender to the One who called.
Hajj — The Fifth Pillar of Islam
Hajj is the fifth and final pillar of Islam, the once-in-a-lifetime obligation upon every Muslim who possesses the physical health and financial means to undertake it. It is performed in the month of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar, and draws together the largest annual gathering of human beings on the surface of the earth where millions of Muslims from every race, every language, every culture, and every social background, stripped of all worldly distinction and dressed identically in the white garments of ihram, standing equal before Allah in the most powerful expression of Islamic brotherhood and human submission available on this earth.
The rituals of Hajj, the ihram, the tawaf around the Kaabah, the sa’i between Safa and Marwa, the standing at Arafah, the night at Muzdalifah, the days of Mina, the stoning of the jamarat, and the farewell tawaf follow precisely the path walked by Ibrahim ﷺ, Hajar ﷺ, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, linking every pilgrim across fourteen centuries in a single, continuous act of worship that transcends time and declares the eternal truth at the heart of Islam: that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “An accepted Hajj — al-hajj al-mabrur — has no reward except Jannah.”
Umrah — The Blessed Visit to the House of Allah
Umrah is the voluntary, lesser pilgrimage, a journey to the House of Allah in Makkah that can be performed at any time of the Islamic year outside the days of Hajj. While Umrah is not obligatory but carries immense virtue and reward. The Prophet ﷺ said: “One Umrah to the next is an expiation for what comes between them, and an accepted Hajj has no reward except Jannah.” The rituals of Umrah, ihram from the meeqat, tawaf around the Kaabah, sa’i between Safa and Marwa, and the cutting or shaving of the hair are fewer and simpler than Hajj, making Umrah an accessible and profoundly rewarding spiritual journey for Muslims at every stage of life.
For many Muslims, Umrah is the first experience of the Haram, the first time they lay eyes on the Kaabah, the first time they hear the adhan echoing through the sacred precincts of Makkah, the first time they feel the indescribable spiritual reality of being in the house of their Lord. It is an experience that no amount of preparation can fully anticipate and that leaves every pilgrim permanently changed.
