Supplications Before Sleeping – Authentic Sunnah for Protection, Peace, and Divine Connection

You are currently viewing Supplications Before Sleeping – Authentic Sunnah for Protection, Peace, and Divine Connection

In a fast-paced world filled with stress, distractions, and digital noise, many of us end our days exhausted, scrolling through phones, watching mindless content, or simply collapsing into bed. Yet, the last few moments before sleep hold immense spiritual power in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not leave this sacred part of the day unattended. In fact, he provided us with a complete guide of authentic supplications and prophetic habits to shield our souls and bodies before drifting into slumber.

These are not merely bedtime rituals, they are shields from Shayṭān, gateways to inner peace, and acts of devotion that earn Allah’s mercy and protection. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us specific adhkar (remembrances) to recite before sleeping, ensuring Allah’s protection throughout the night. Imagine sleeping under the guardianship of angels, safeguarded from Shaytan, nightmares, and unseen evils. This is the Sunnah way!

Why Necessity of Bedtime Supplications is Important in Islam

Sleep is a minor death. Allah says in the Qur’an:

Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. (Quran 39:42)

This verse shows that sleep is a form of the soul departing temporarily. You may or may not wake up. That’s why the Prophet ﷺ said:

“When you go to bed, perform ablution as is done for prayer; then lie down upon the right side and recite given supplication. If a person die that night, would die on Fitra.” (Sahih Muslim 2710)

Making dhikr before sleep is both protection for the soul and preparation for the Hereafter. It’s a way to sleep in peace, connected to Allah in submission, with your sins forgiven, free from nightmares and anxieties and Shayṭān blocked from harming you.

Rewards and Benefits of Sleeping Upon Sunnah

  • Protection from Shayṭān and Jinn

  • Forgiveness of sins before sleep

  • Peaceful and tranquil sleep

  • Increased barakah (blessing) in your rest

  • Soul remains connected to Allah during unconsciousness

“There is no person who goes to bed in a state of purity, then wakes up at night, and asks Allah for something in this world or the Hereafter, but it will be given to him.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3881)

Laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahul-Waahidul-Qahhaaru, Rabbus-samaawaati wal’ardhi wa maa baynahumal-‘Azeezul-Ghaffaaru.

Meaning: There is none worthy of worship but Allah, the One, the Victorious, Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the All-Mighty, the All-Forgiving.”

Aaishah (radhi-yAllaahu ‘Anhaa) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) used to say at night if he turned during sleep.” (Hisn al-Muslim 112)

4. Upon seeing a good or a bad dream

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“A good dream that comes true is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan, so if anyone of you sees a bad dream, he should seek refuge with Allah from Satan and should spit on the left, for the bad dream will not harm him.”          (Sahih Bukhari 6986)

What to do upon having a bad dream:

  • 1. Spit to your left (three times).
  • 2. Seek refuge in Allah from the Devil and from the evil of what you have seen (three times).

أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم

 Auzubillah Minashaitan Nirajeem

‘O Allah, I seek refuge in you from the accursed Satan’

  • 3. Do not speak about it to anyone.
  • 4. Turn over on your other side.
  • 5. Get up and pray if you desire to do so.
